I don't know why some people don't like this place. I personally think this is a great place with very authentic Chinese food! Not those American Chinese food. Would definitely come back again. The waiters and waitresses are very friendly.

For the Big Island, this was pretty good. For mainland fare, it would be 3 stars. Salt& pepper pork ribs were flavorful, small pieces. Wor Won Soup was very Cantonese-style and hearty. Char Sui fried rice, BBQ pork was mince cut on the greasy side. Beef Chow Fun with plentiful veggies - cabbage, bean sprouts, onions, also on salty side but not bad. Chow Fun is very limited on the island, so being that I needed a Chinese fix, it met the need. Grateful for the Chinese Restaurant on West Hawaii.

This restaurant was a pleasant surprise for us. We ventured into Kona during our stay at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and we had a craving for reasonably priced food (not available at the Hilton), with more vegetables than one is accustomed to getting when staying in a resort. I glanced at Yelp reviews of this place and led my family here (and felt like a hero afterward). The first night we ordered sweet and sour pork (a kid's favorite), garlic bok choy (one of my favorites), fried rice, and shrimp with Chinese peas. We enjoyed our dinner so much, we returned two nights later, and ordered some different dishes, which were pretty good. Now, this is not a "gourmet" type Chinese restaurant. But the servers were very friendly, and we noticed quite a few local families dining there, who must be regulars, as the servers seemed to know them. So, for good, basic local-style Chinese food at a decent price point, this is the place to be!

Food was close to what you find for mainland Chinese. Service was good. Mongolian beef is sweet and was a bit like marinated beef jerky. Ginger chicken was good but could not get over the lack of color on the chicken itself. I'd give it 3.5.

Food is good , hot and fast. There is a "panda express" food counter for some items.

Went for lunch we had the hot and sour soup which was very good and hearty, then we followed with pot stickers they were tasty but I like mine more doughy but still quite tasty, then we had the hong kong fish which was fabulous and a small bowl of white rice and jasmine tea. This rather small lunch ended up costing me 54 dollars with tip that is a bit excessive. Overall I may go back since we now own a condo in Kailua kona I will give it a few more tries. Btw the hot ready to go dishes did not look tasty at all so we chose to order off the menu.

Excellent authentic Cantonese food. Not Americanized versions of chinese food like Panda Express. Large portions. Well seasoned. Staff friendly and efficient.

I wish I could give this place zero stars. And I'm not normally overly critical of places enough to register my disgust and disappointment for the world to see. But here goes... The orange chicken I ordered certainly did not taste like any chicken I've ever had in my life. The sauce had a very strange aftertaste, much like cleaning solution. I tried two bites and had to push it aside. My wife also took a few bites of this dish to make sure I wasn't imagining things, and she was visibly disturbed at what she ate. We also ordered Mongolian chicken, which was the most flavorless dish I've ever tasted. Having ACTUAL cleaning solution on the dish might have helped it a bit. The only redeeming quality that I could give the restaurant for their 1 star rating is when the server had noticed we had a plate full of orange chicken and we explained what we encountered, they removed it from our tab. We still walked out paying close to $30 after tip for something that I wouldn't feed to my dog, cat, a homeless person, or my worst enemy. Avoid at all costs. Overpriced, terrible quality of food, and you will regret it. Also of note, my wife threw up about 20 minutes after we left the restaurant. Blame it on the orange chicken.

I have been a resident for over 25 years & never felt so ripped off! I wanted to order a fresh quart of Orange Chicken! Which they said they would cook it in the back! The younger man speaking in Chinese must have told the gal to take it off the buffet already made line! He looked at me & said "it's the same thing"! It cost me nearly $18! Ridiculous! I could have ordered 2 plates of 3 choices for the same amount & come out ahead! Will never go back!

After a trip down South and coming up through Old Kona, we were deciding where to eat and wanted a sit down place. My aunt suggested this restaurant because it was really good that last time she came (which she mentioned was years ago). Should NOT have gone there. The menu items were very expensive and small portions. I understand that it was true Chinese style with the round swirling table in the center to share, but the again the portions were too small to share. So we decided instead of wasting over $50 for us not to even be satisfied, we chose the option of having 2-choice plates from the steam table for $11 each. The choices at the steam table were minimal and very distasteful with no flavor at all. Each variety of chicken looked and tasted very dry and the other "options" we had were horrible as well. We were literally picking from our plates. Definitely was not satisfied from eating. Overall, what a waste of money and time. It was such a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT and we will never go back here again.

So, we were looking for basic Chinese food. Really didn't set the bar too high. This place was 'ok'. Just like the description for 2 stars - 'Meh. I've experienced better' summed it up perfectly.

I've been going to RJG for the past 20 years. Ever since they've opened their doors i've been eating here. I use to work in the Lanihau Center and for lunch or dinner i'd always order take-out. They are not skimpy at all, they always give more than i can eat! I would take my friends there too or order them take-out as well so we can all have lunch or dinner together. 21 years later i am still going there on occasion. Not as often as i don't burn calories like I use to so need to watch my physique. I now take my wife and kids there and as usual they give alot of food! My wife loves the Tofu vegetable soup. i don't eat this as much as i use to but i love their roast pork! Especially when the skin is crunchy!! I order this every so often. Consistency has always been the same...although at one point it changed a little then quicky found its way back. If anyone asks me where's a good chinese restuarant RJG is always my first choice even if their are several others here in K-town. Definatly enjoy their food you might too. Double shaka rating for me.

I just had lunch there and I was finishing up my meal and I found a strand of steel wool in my noodles ...GROSS! I brought it to the attention of the ladies at the cash register and they said something like " ooh dat wha we kween da dishes wit...Sowree". Yeah I think if there is metal strands in the food they should jump to comp your meal because that was a potential choking hazard....The food was not that good ...The staff was obviously not professional and there is crap in the food to boot!

  • Bill R.

Decided to get some food to go from the steam table and sit outside. The chow mien was so-so, with very thin noodles. Liked the self serve chili sauce and hot mustard. The orange chicken was more "orange" than most places, which is good. However, the beef with broccoli had one piece, yes one piece of beef. One. Plenty of excellent broccoli but one piece of beef is unacceptable. And of course one small scoop of each entree is a paltry amount for the price.

The one star is me being generous in my opinion. My mother, daughter and I went in based off descent reviews and the place being busy, but I don't get it. We made the mistake of getting the dinner for one which we figured out quickly was straight from the steam table... Aka COLD and sat for awhile. I now regret not ordering actual dishes which would of at least resulted in fresh hot cooked food. We also ordered crab ragoon only to never get them because they were out.... Waitress failed to let us in on that bit of info. We have wonderful meals all week, but for this to be our last pisses me off to be frank.

Correct address is 75-5595 Palani Rd, Kailua, HI 96740. This place is probably the only restaurant that I know of that serves some authentic Chinese food within the Kailua Kona area. They do have some Americanized dishes like chow mein but this review will be geared towards the authentic stuff. I'll say this now, it won't beat San Francisco but it does a pretty good job. A few items like spareribs, honey walnut shrimp, and lettuce wrap pork tasted similar to the mainland. Gramps and grandma gave their seal of approval so I will give mine. ** The waiter speaks Cantonese so that was a bonus to the Chinese speakers. Also, he looked like John Cho (Harold & Kumar) which was hilarious.

Our family didn't know where to go... we figured to just give it a try, suprised. .. it was really good! The steam fish to the soup was great, we shall be back!

  • Juslyn I.

Food was over cooked, sloppy handling and over priced. She did not tell us that certain items on the buffet line cost more and when you questioned her, they don't speak English so she can't understand nor explain it to you. Will not go there again. Tried a year ago and it was just okay, decided to try it again and it went from bad to worse!

(EDIT - I went there with my father when I was in Hawaii for the summer to try their a la carte sit-down menu. The food was EXCELLENT. Don't bother with the heated food in the front. Changed my review from 2 to 4 stars. Also, service was nicer than last time. What's below is my original review, but I'd just have to say to go there for some good food now.) Ever since the previous owner left (he went to Big Island Grill I believe, which is good, but that's another story), the buffet food here doesn't seem the same. Or rather, it does seem the same...but it's not hot anymore. I used to LOVE coming here for lunch or dinner (buffet food for lunch and order-in for dinner) and it was always GREAT. Now, the menu is exactly the same, but their food is just stale and...well not all that great anymore. I can't say for the order-in food, but now the buffet food just sucks to be blunt. Maybe people should just order-in instead of getting the buffet since the kitchen-ordered food seems to be getting positive reviews. Don't bother getting food from the open trays. Is it really that hard to turn on your water boilers underneath? Hope the owner looks at this and wises up. You're running a great restaurant...don't run it into the ground with that simple mistake (also for your employees...it doesn't hurt for them to smile once in the while!) By the way - their kau yuk, duck, and ginger chicken are all absolutely great. For the moment, don't get them from the buffet unless you like gross, lukewarm food. -From a concerned and long time customer

Better than panda express. Love the roast duck.

  • Mike S.

Absolutely horrible! Worst Chinese food I ate in 10 years and I eat a lot of Chinese! I always thought Panda Express was the worst Chinese on the planet but I now have found a new all time low! This place even over cooked their white rice! Never saw a Chinese place that can't even make rice! The pork based entree was so atrocious that my wife and I could not even eat it after two bites. Later our stomachs were uneasy. Fortunately we didn't get sick. STAY AWAY from this place!!! I wish Yelp could offer negative stars for possible food poisoning and not fresh food.

Great chinese food here. I love the Char Sui Pork and the honey walnut shrimp. Order from menu and do not get the food in buffet as it looks like it has been there waaaay too long. Friendly service

I ate here tonight because I was desperate. The place I wanted to go for dinner was closed. So, I drove around with my family trying to find someplace that would not poison us. This place was pretty crowded so we figured we would try it. Let me also preface this review with the fact that I have an apartment in Xiao Lou, China. I spend a fair amount of time in China on business and as a result I have a rather harsh view on Chinese food served here in the U.S. We ordered safely....Lemon Chicken, Chicken fried rice, and beef with broccoli and egg flower soup. SURPRISE....it was actually quite good. I did remind them no M.S.G., and easy on the corn starch. It was a huge surprise that it was not just good, it was actually quite good. Lemon Chicken was a little overdone...but the sauce was not overly sweet like it tends to be here in the states. Fried rice as as good as what I get in my tiny village. Service was o.k., efficient, helpful, food came out quickly. In short, a total shocking surprise. When I was leaving I spoke to the owner and shared my pleasure at finding such a surprise in the middle of Kailua, Kona. Now...having said all the positive things....the buffet looked bloody awful. Folks, they DO NOT have buffets in China. They just don't. Steam tabled food is NASTY. Order off the menu and get it made fresh. Enjoy.

All of the low reviews I have seen for this restaurant is because of Americanized Chinese food. Honestly, I don't know how it tastes, but I gather you can get stuff like General Tao's chicken or sweet and sour chicken anywhere, such as Panda Express, and have it taste about the same. What sets this place apart is for anyone craving for authentic Chinese food, stuff that actually tastes like it was made in China, this is the only place in Kailua-Kona, perhaps all of Big Island, to get it. Peking duck, Hong Kong style shrimp, fish, it has it all, and I recommend anyone who wants to taste true, authentic Chinese food to come here and order straight from the menu rather than from the Panda Express-style bar.

Food's actually a 3, but given that this is probably one of the best options on the island, upping it to a 4 :) ----- Let me start by saying, I'm usually really, REALLY picky about my Chinese food. Hey, I'm Taiwanese, and I grew up in SoCal. But after a week in Hawaii with no Chinese food to speak of, I figured I'd give even this dingy place a shot--I was going through withdrawal!!! What really surprised me is that this place was actually surprisingly good. Thank you yelpers, for warning us not to eat from the buffet/ready-made food, and instead to order off the menu! Skip the hot and sour soup, it's basically a whole cup of white pepper. Instead, load up on the fried fish dish on the first page (sorry, I don't know what it's called!)--it's REALLY tasty. Seriously, it's surprising how much we all loved that dish--we put in an order for another one! We also got the steamed fish (cing zhen yu), which was really tasty too, for those of you who like "lighter" foods, like me. As a warning, the crispy shrimp dish has shrimp with shell (for extra crunch I suppose), so if that's not your thing, don't get it--flavored nicely though. Also got the honey walnut shrimp, which was...well, honey walnut shrimp. not particularly chinese-tasting. We got the green beans (si ji dou) which were a little salty, but very delicious, and pepper beef, which was a fairly standard rendition of the dish. Our meal here was much cheaper than the other meals we had nearby--though pricier than comparable Chinese food back in CA, Boston, NYC, DC. But hey, it's vacation, right?! Given there are very few other Chinese options in and around Kona, this place is highly recommended if you're suffering from Chinese-food withdrawl, and looking for a bite to eat.

I have no idea how anyone can give this more then 1 star and I'm giving them that because the water had ice in it and the server was good about refilling my iced tea! Potstickers - horrible. Way to chewy and doughy. Rice - overcooked. Buffet - all the food was cold (a few my colleagues hit the buffet up for lunch). Meats were chewy and seemed like it was the previous days food. Peking Duck - I highly recommend they look up a better recipe on Google because I'm not even sure what they served was DUCK! Absolutely awful. Will never ever be going back. Do not waste your time......

Average Chinese food. Similar to crappy mall Chinese food. But the salt and pepper spareribs was good but they didnt give much of it.

  • Shawnee G.

The service was acceptable enough (even though we didn't get water refills) as was the location and restaurant atmosphere. The prices seemed standard, but the taste of the food was lacking. We ordered the char siu, fried shumai, and potstickers as appetizers. The char siu was decent and hubby liked the potstickers the best, but I've had better. Fried shumai was not good at all. For entrees we ordered orange chicken which tasted really funky, beef chow fun, and shrimp ala canton. The noodles were bland and completely flavorless and the shrimp was measly drizzled with a watery sweet and sour sauce. After getting the bill I realized we were charged for white rice. That usually comes standard at Chinese restaurants when ordering entrees. Whatever, I was completely disappointed and I left hubby to pay the $60 bill. Don't be fooled by their fancy menus, if second rate Chinese food is what you want, I guess this would be the place to go. I, personally, being really picky about good Chinese food, will not return again.

Walking in it reminds me of a fast food resturant meets panda express. But after ordering one of the daily specials I was won over by the rib eye. Friendly staff and a nice quite place to eat. 3 stars as it wasn't the best I ever ate but pretty good. Why is it everywhere I go to eat costs 20$?

    (3)
  • Kevin D.

Family wanted some Chinese food. This was the only one near us so we decided to give it a try. The service was excellent, waiter was really helpful and courteous. The food however reminded me of Panda express. Not very authentic Chinese. I'm from CA where Chinese restaurants are plentiful so it wouldn't be fair to compare. They have two options, all you can eat buffet or order off the menu. Give it a try if you are ever in the area

  • R C.

May be the closest to decent and authentic in terms of chinese food that Kona may have to offfer. Not cheap for chinese food. They have a buffet which is not fascinating. The grilled pork is good. It has the crispy skin on the outside. Their chow fun is decent. The other day they were out of string beans so I ordered baby bok choy with beef to take out and regretted it. For $8.50 the take out container was half empty and the brown sauce was not so yummy.

After reading the previous review, we were a bit hesitant to try it, but since we were in the mood for Chinese and this was the only one around, we went anyway. In my opinion, the Royal Jade was definitely OK. This is not gourmet and most of the business appears to be steam table take out, but we ordered from the menu and really enjoyed the meal. The wor won ton soup was full of meat and veggies along with the won tons. The black bean chicken had a nice selection of veggies along with the chicken in a very typical sauce. Nothing here super fancy or special, but a very nice, reasonably priced (especially when considering Hawaii prices) meal.

Oh gosh can you say too much MSG!!! Food tasted too salty because of the amount of MSG they put in there food. I m a chinese food lover and know whats good. This place is not tasteful.

It's Saturday night and this restaurant was crowded. You can order from the showcased already cooked items or from a menu. We noticed some authentic menu items like duck with the steamed buns, prawns with walnut sauce, bbq pork and soft tofu dishes. We ordered fried founder with garlic sauce, and grandma's pork tofu with chili sauce. The food was pretty tasty and fresh. The restaurant is not fancy, family style seating. We usually try to eat in Chinatown, wherever city we may be visiting but this place may have to do in the Big Island of Hawaii.

The shoyu chicken, pot stickers and fried rice were horrible. The service was good and the place was full of locals, so maybe they know what to order.

I'm here with family and they are hooked on Chinese food. Me, I could go without. This means, we've been here about three times in the last week and I can boldly say that this place is decent. It's pretty authentic if you order from the menu and not the buffet. What, chinese food buffet not authentic?! Things we've found consistently good: green beans with bbq pork and the fish with black bean sauce. The fish changes regularly so just be sure it's a kind you like. Also, be sure to ask what fresh chinese greens they have - they once had watercress which was good one time then the next time, we just got watercress stems. Personally, I'd just get a bowl of the wonton mein (noodles). And another comment on the buffet, it should be called carb mountain, they pile high with the noodles and rice and lightly sprinkle with the veggies and meat.

Not good. I had the chicken fried rice and it was so disappointing. And our other dish was even worse. I won't eat here again.

We ate here about a week ago. We eat at this restaurant every few months and have been going there about 5 years. One thing you can say about this place it that they are consistent. As the other reviewers note there is a ready-made food (buffet like) and order off the menu. The ready-made food is NOT all-you-can-eat, instead it is "plate style", i.e. $5.95 for one entree with fried rice or chow mein, $6.95 for two entrees, and $7.95 for three entrees. You can then take it to the table and eat. Otherwise, you can order off the menu and eat family style. When we are in a hurry, we pick our food from the ready-made steam table, otherwise we order from the menu. The food is always better when you order from the menu. The ambience is a nice family style Chinese restaurant. The owner is not trying to be "authentic", but serves food to cater to the local tastes. Most of the customers are locals and about 1/3 who are visitors to the island. So if you are looking for authentic Chinese food, this is not the place; but if you are looking for decent island-style Chinese food you are in luck.

  • Larry S.

This is the worst Chinese food I've ever had. 11$ for general tao chicken and they don't give you any rice or veggies. Just a pile of the worst tasting chicken (if you could even call it chicken). Panda express would be a better choice than this place. If you are interested in Chinese food pass this place by without a second guess.

  • Jonathan L.

No hand towels, I told the waitress and she brushed me off like it was no big deal. She was very rude. The food was horrible. The meat tasted "gamey" and it was served cold. We had to return the food and walk out. I never bash on places but after the treatment I received and the food everyone should know. I ordered the Orange Chicken and General TSO chicken. Maybe others will have better luck with a different waitress and different dishes.

    (1)
  • Julie P.

The worst food I've ever ate! The chicken wasn't real chicken at all, maybe some other animal and the taste was horrible! We ordered 3 items, took a single bite out of each dish, payed for our "dinner" and left. I'm still in shock that people actually eat here. I'm not one to write bad reviews, but this is the worst food I've ever eaten and the worst service I've ever received. Do yourself a favor and try some other place.

Never coming back to this place.. Food is very small portions that is way over priced, along with tables being set up with dirty forks on tables. We were also served water that had what looked to be old rice floating in the water. Everyone around us was served their drinks even though we ordered our beers before the new guests walked in. Like I said very poor service and what a huge disappointment with the food.. If you're looking for good Chinese food with portions matching their prices then this place would not be for you!!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
